Why Bhavai Still Matters

Bhavai, the folk theatre form attributed to Asait Thakar in the 14th century, blends song, satire, and devotion. For centuries it travelled from village to village, telling stories of kings, lovers, and gods. Modernist writers like C. C. Mehta and later Pannalal Patel borrowed from Bhavai's rhythm. Today, urban theatre companies are rediscovering Bhavai's directness, staging it in experimental venues.
